Default 2003 Yamaha Wolverine 350 Backfire

Hey guys.. Just looking for a bit of help.. I have a 2003 wolverine. It has very low hours on it, but sat. The carb was nasty. I cleaned it all out, new plug, new gas, it ran ok. Took it for a test run.. It started to backfire and die. Than wouldnt start. Pulled the carb off again, re cleaned it out. It starts right up, runs smooth, than backfires and stalls. (pushes the carb right out of the boot) I'm looking for some ideas on what would cause that. Thanks!

out of time, carbon build up on piston causing per ingintion, do a compression check then a leak down test. should tell you a good bit. check the air filter. was it on? some bikes WILL NOT run with out an air filter.

NJ03, did you soak the carb in solvent overnight? Describe how you cleaned the jets. Sounds lean. Be careful, if it is lean it could burn the piston. What is the longestperiod of time it sat?

For cleaning, I pulled the jets out and cleaned it all out with carb cleaner. I did soak in solvent, but only for about an hour or so to break up the crap that was in it. The quad sat for about a year without moving. When it runs, it has a slight sound of a valve tap. I have the a/f scew set to about 2 1/4 - 2 1/2 right now. I was running it with the airbox and filter off at the time of backfiring, but when it died the first time it was all together. It seems to run ok with the box/filter off. One thing i did notice is that when you rev the motor, gas is sprayed out the front of the carb (Like a mist out from the intake side) Is this normal? Thanks guys! Best forum I ever joined..

+1 more for checking the timing.

Or maybe a restricted exhaust causing too much back pressure??

Sounds lean to me too. One thing, just soaking/spraying the jets will never get them clean (enough) after sitting varnished. You need either torch tip cleaners or a wire drill set to clean them right. One way to verify it is the carb (jets) is to run itwith the enrichener/chokeand see if itruns better. Sure sign of restricted jets (or an intake leak) if it does.

I cleaned the jets with a small wire that i use for the small engines.. We ran the quad for about an hour.. ran great.. smooth, no problems.. It sat for bout 20 mins than my gf tried to ride it again and now it wont take any throttle.. it idles beautiful but when you give it gas it just wont rev up.. it doesnt pop, but more or less puts.. when you let go, idle smooths out again.. I'm not quite sure on how to check the timing, but i assumed timing and valves were ok b/c of how it ran (so good) for that hour.

Timing/valves won't change due it sitting for a year or so anyway. I'm sure you knew that but just saying. How does inside the fuel tank look from bad fuel sitting? Chances are crap from the tank are clogging up what you just cleaned. Plastic tanks are easily cleaned of scale with a handfull of clean pea gravel, water, and some good music to shake to. Eddie Money "shakin" works. Seriously, bet the crap in the tank is undoing what you did.

i agree with rickgto. clean the tank put in new gas and what the hell buy new jets! I used to ride warriors (very similar engine to the wolverine) and they are sensitive to changes. (do you have a stock pipe?) my warriors ran terrible with a pipe change and no jetting changes. I always had to change the main jet or they would backfire badly!

The quad is bone stock.. I'm gonna pull the carb again tom morning and see what i can come of it. As far as the tank goes, I didnt really clean it, but it was about empty. I also threw on an inline gasfilter incase of any debris.. its clear so I should be able to see if I'm getting any crap from the tank. Maybe buying some new jets might be a good idea.. Thanks.. I'll see how it works out tomorrow!
