Default Need Help Timing Motor!!!!

Ok so Im doing the BBK and the crank turned when installing the piston. Where exactly are the timing marks??? The book says "turn the crankshaft clockwise with the recoil starter and align the t-mark on the flywheel with the index notch on the crankcase cover". Now all you have to do is remove the recoil starter? Or do you have to pull the front of the case off to access the timing mark??? Anybody ran into this problem before??

Thats the location. It can be a booger sometimes to get the timing right on the mark. Since you are doing a BBK you shouldn't have the spark plug in anyway, but if by any chance you do, take it out so it will be easier to get the timing mark lined up.

I pulled the rope several times before I got it to line up.

You got the cylinder head off and you can't find the timing marks......your a brave soul. Its where the others have indicated.

But now you have another problem.....make sure you are on the compression stroke when lining up the marks. The timing marks are only correct every other crank revolution. You should know how if you are in this deep....hint....look at a manual and watch the valves, then you will only assemble it once...maybe.

GOOD LUCK

There is no compression stroke until the cam is installed and timed........? Just TDC. Ignition is crank fired every revolution correct? That being the case TDC is simply TDC to time the cam. Edit. Forgot to add. Don't know if this applies to the Rincon as I'm not familiar with the timing plug hole setup but if it's a clear shot through the timing plug hole to the crank flywheel simply set TDC and screw a bolt in (GENTLY!) to hold the crank at TDC. Just don't forget to remove the bolt..............HD trick.

Thanks for the help which it was none at all. To be sure you know everything about a single cylinder motor and that there is only one top dead center when there is no cam installed......oops maybe that slipped your mind. Oh well guess not everybody can be as superior as you are. To all that helped, the timing plug is not shown in the honda manual and as soon as I found that I got it down pat. Thanks for the helpful comments and not to the critics.

Are you looking at the owners manual? Your first post is verbatum from the service manual so I assume you are looking at the service manual. The photograph almost identical to CoMtnMan's is on page 4-8 of my 2007 service manual and the text you wrote is on 4-9.
