Default Compression test question

I have an 09 Rincon with only 370 miles on it and never sunk that smokes like a freight train on start up. After she warms up a bit the white/greyish smoke goes away but when you hit the throttle black smoke comes out of the exhaust. I decided to order a top end rebuild kit assuming the valve stem seals are shot. However, before I tear it apart I thought I'd do some investigating. I finally found my compression tester and did the test by the service manual. It says the compression should be 74psi, well I'm getting 180psi. I can see some carbon buildup on the piston however it shouldn't be enough to double the compression. I've googled this and have gotten conflicting results. Some say over 150psi is good and others say 74psi. I'm at a loss here

Double check your gauge on another motor that you know what the compression should be and see if you get the same results (high reading). It can be any engine as long as you know it is running right and you know what the compression should be.

Sounds to me like the auto decompression device on the cam is not functioning. The lower number in the manual (74psi) assumes the engine is triggering the decompression device on the cam when you turn engine over with starter to check compression. At 150 psi, you are a little over 10:1 compression, which is good for a Rincon, assuming the decompression device is not working. Once the Rincon starts up, the decompression device is dissabled and it runs at higher compression.

Blue smoke is from oil, black from too much gas. Is it burning oil? Most Rincons are good for many more miles before piston rings or valve seals puke. The auto decompression device is known to fail on some Rincons.

You should first warm up engine, 74 psi at 390 Rpm for 4-7 seconds. How does your plug look. Corndog is right ,black smoke is fuel .

Compression ratio should be 9.2: 1

If the gauge is known good I'd agree with the decrompressor being faulty but that wouldn't explain the oil/fuel smoke. It "sounds" to me like the engine is being flooded with fuel which would raise cr as well as cause smoke due to cylinder wash. Does it run good? Easy starting? Is it using oil? Only other causes of high cranking compression is overly advanced cam, flat exhaust lobe, cracked piston ring lands causing a severe carbon buildup and oil seep, or the dreaded "someone put diesel fuel in it"............?????? CD. Actual compression ratio has no direct correlation to cranking psi. Dynamic cr cannot be measured by cranking psi. Way too many variables. Cam timing, cylinder fill, static cr, and of course, atmospheric pressure. An 8:1 engine can have higher cranking psi than an 11:1 engine due to cam characteristics alone.

Did you just purchase the bike this way? What's the history of the machine? Did this just happen one day? Oil level ok ? Any fuel additives in the fuel? For it to all of a sudden have white and then black smoke is highly suspicious. Seems like it just got a dose of sea foam or something...

Well, I bought it new off the showroom floor. It has always had a little puff of black smoke while hitting the gas while riding but nothing I was too concerned about. I was deployed for 7 months and it sat most of last year only riding it a couple times. Never noticed any oil consumption and the white/grey smoke only happens until it gets warmed up then it's black smoke when you hit the throttle off idle in nuetral. Other than the smoke at start up it runs great. No power issues, fuel mileage hasn't changed. It starts right up, maybe 2 turns on it's runnung. I assumed it was valve stem seals because it's oil burning and the white/grey smoke goes away until it sits over night. My son did put a shot of seafoam in the other day and I know that stuff works good in making things smoke when it loosens up carbon deposits and whatnot. I was just making sure I didn't have any piston or ring issues before I broke into it to change the valve seals and have to wait a week to get more parts. I haven't done any engine mods at all. Just routine maintenance. I'm going to geet another compression tester tomorrow and try again before I rip the head off

I wouldn't be to quick on tearing things apart . Fresh gas and let the sea foam play its part . I can't see by holding back a little bit would hurt the engine any.
