Default suggestions on vehicle warranty

I believe the transmission on my 06 Silverado is about to give out. I can fix most things but I don’t fell comfortable working on an automatic transmission… My question is should I spend $2000+ on an extended warranty and hope they cover it? Any recommendations on an extended warranty company? Money is tight (plus I’m getting lazy) and I don’t want to foot the bill on future repairs too. Thanks!

Tom,
If you get an extended warranty, read the fine print. See if there are any exclusions for 'preexisting conditions' and also look to see if there is a period of time that you must wait before you can make a claim.

Warranties are like insurance: "When you pay your premiums, you are betting that amount that an occurance WILL happen. Likewise, when you pay your premiums, the insurance company is betting the amount YOU are PAYING THEM that an occurance won't happen.

If you have a possible preexisting condition, I'd be very careful as insurance/warranty companies do absolutely everything they can to minimize their losses and maximize their profits. If there is a preexisting condition with your vehicle, the ball is in the insurance companys' court; not yours'. It would be a shame for you to purchase the warranty and then be denied the claim.
Just lookin' out for you!

At this point it is just a first to second hardshift (feels like I have a shift kit installed) and it feels to be bogged down when towing a light trailer (2000lbs). I've been driving my other truck more often and think I can wait some time before having to file a claim. The only fine print that I read that would be an issue is I would have to get the oil changed by a shop every 4 months... I hate letting others perform routine maintenance on my vehicles.
I've had some heartburn with other company's on warranty work and was hoping that someone had a good experience and recommended a company.

Why not bring it to a transmission shop, or even the dealer to have the transmission looked at? Maybe its not about to give out, and needs service or adjustment. From my experience, hard shifting usually isnt a sign that the transmission is about to go out..

I agree about the hard shift. It's the sloppy shift that you usually need to worry about.

I had a Dodge Durango that had a sloppy shifting transmission. I thought it was toast, turned out to be a bad TPS that was screwing up the transmission.

Allison Transmission? PM me if you want some great references to re-builds that will cost about as much as your insurance, and it will be good to 700HP. If it's a gasser read this.... title "Jerking" below then Reference 2 link at the bottom....

Most Silverado transmission problems are centered on hard shifting or surging issues after stopping. These problems could create safety hazards and should be brought to a Chevrolet dealer's attention immediately.
  1. Shift Lever
    • On 2005 Silverados, the light for the transmission shift lever may not illuminate, which may prevent the driver from knowing which gear is selected, according to Motor Trend (see Reference 1).

    Shift Solenoid
    • Some Silverado transmissions may have difficulty getting out of third gear and may be caused by a faulty shift solenoid, according to lemonlawclaims.com (see Reference 3).

    Jerking
    • The Silverado's automatic transmission may have problems shifting from first to second gear with a hard jerking, and likely can be solved with a retrofit kit from a Chevrolet dealer (see references 2 and 3).

    Surging
    • The Silverado 2500 heavy-duty pickup equipped with an Allison 1000 automatic while in reverse could jerk and surge. It should be inspected by the dealer, according to lemonlawclaims.com (see Reference 3).

    Continuing Forward
    • On some occasions while the transmission is cold, the Silverado may experience surging after the brakes are applied, forcing the driver to put the vehicle in neutral. A dealer should inspect the problem (see Reference 3).

    Fail Safe

A good place to look for insurance is at a GM Dealer.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm a member on a Silverado forum but I've gotten better responses on here and I appreciate any/all feedback.

Oilcan, thanks for the references but my issue is just slightly different than most... It hardshifts when cold or hot, unless I accelerate quickly. It will also shift smooth if I have some weight in the bed (like the Rincon). When towing a light trailer it shifts smooth but feels like I'm towing 6000lbs.

The vehicle is a 06 crew cab Silverado 5.3L with a 4L60E 4 speed transmission. 106K. I changed trans fluid and filter at 98K and problem has been constant (not better or worse). I check the fluid level every few weeks and it does not smell burnt or need any added.

Thanks again.

Tom did you use Dex 6 or Dex 3? Your truck requires the Dex6 and Dex 3 will cause the symptoms your describing.
