Harley Dog

A couple of years ago I bought a Browning BAR in 30-06. It is not the military model but the first run of the sporting BAR. I was checking the serial number and it was only 4 digits. I searched the web but could not find out anything that matched my number. This morning I called Browning and gave them the serial number. It is 18M7. I was told that the 7 was the year it was made, 1967 which is the first year of production. The M is the model witch stands for BAR High Power. The 18 turns out to be the serial number meaning it was the 18th rifle made. It was made in Belgium and according to Browning it is worth some good money because of the 18th made in the first production run. The person I got it from never fired it and I have only put about 15 rounds through it. It is perfect condition, no rust, pits, scratches and the bluing is also perfect. A very nice surprise to me since I bought it for $300.

Browning said they could not really give me a true value without seeing it of course. I asked for a ballpark figure and he said any where from $3000 to $6000 if it is in the shape I said it was in. He also said it could be worth even more to the right collector who is looking for that sort of thing.

Nice Harley. It looks a lot like the one I inherited from my Grandfather, except my has engraving on both side.


I know mine was also Belgian made, but not sure the year. I will have to check the serial number on it when I get back in from offshore. I think it is something similar to yours. I know 20 years ago, when I first got it, the guy at the local gun shop offered me $1500 for it. So I'm sure it was worth more than that then. No telling what it is worth now.

Very nice. My only problem now is I am almost afraid to take it out and shoot it. Oh well, I have 4 30-06's to shoot. I think the BAR will stay in the safe. Maybe pass it on to my kid or grand kid if I ever get one. I'll see what happens.
