Skunked

Anybody here ever dumb enough to shoot a skunk? I have one I believe has taken-up residence under my deck. I am not going in to look for him/her. I have my 22 loaded and starting tonight will be watching with my flood lights on. Hope to dispatch this beast a distance from the house.

Wish me luck or give me a better idea!

There are some deterrents you can make up in spray form that would make him/her want to leave..

IF you kill him/her away from the house, there may be young ones left behind that could die, and smell up the place.

Thinking maybe a trap, and hope there aren't babies, or go look and see if there are babies..

Is the area big enough to crawl in?

Use a Box Trap. It can't spray if it can't lift it's tail.

Under the deck/porch? Is there any tall dead grass around the deck? If so, she's probably built a nest. I know this sounds absurd, but skunks eat all the pests around your home. Good Neighbor.

True, just don't cross paths with it hahaha!

I was hunting pheasant with my German Shorthair a few years ago (Man I miss that dog), and she came upon one 50 or 60 yards infront of me in the thick hardwoods. Before I could call her off, she got sprayed a little. It was a bitch getting that oder off her, and ill never forget it lol..

A Rattlesnake will keep the rodents under your house under control but I would not one hanging around. If you have a dog and it gets sprayed up close and it gets into it's eyes, nose or mouth it can be toxic. It will not kill the dog but be prepared for some heavy vet bills. Get a box trap, trap it and haul it away and release it. Also check for babies. I have gone through this before. Trap it and get rid of it.

I have trapped them before, but it is hazardous moving the trap (using the tarp method). I do not have a pick up any more either, only an SUV.

Deck too low to get under.

It is still early enough that they have not had litters yet.

Was out last night, Bill Murray style with a mag-light on my Ruger 22 rifle, but I never saw it. No smell today or tonight. Fingers crossed it may have moved on. I do not want to kill it unless I have to. We have them on the property all the time, this is the first that took up residence under the deck. Can not even open the windows on the back of the house.

avoid shooting the rear end, keep the scent glands intact and you won't have smell
