The first thing to check is the shift cable adjustment. Will it go into reverse correctly?

If you mean the shifter goes into gear, but the transmission wants to slip when you try to accelerate, that’s fairly normal for these for a cold start. The transmission runs in engine oil, which is much thicker than typical automatic transmission oil. Letting it warm up a few minutes, and keeping the oil right on the full line solves this.

If the shift linkage is actually failing to go into drive, check the shift cable.

I have the same issue sometimes (usally happens when its cold) When it happens I pull the choke out like half way and let it warm up a little more

The 680 Rincon is fuel injected.
