I am finally getting around to cleaning the carburetor on my 2004 Rincon I bought 2 years ago. Smell of gas was present when leaving gas turned on and you could see the carburetor wet. Took it apart and the gasket between the bowl and body was toast. I do have a question about the shim and washer. Which one is the bigger and which one is smaller? When taking apart they slipped off the needle before I could take a good look.

When I pulled everything apart, it was much cleaner than anticipated. No signs of varnish inside. Looks like someone had cleaned in past but didn't change the gasket. I am leaving all the jets as the ATV did run and idle pretty good. I decided to change all the o-rings and gaskets and the hoses. On the throttle stop screw cable, should it be pretty easy to turn. Mine seems pretty rusty. Was going to change it as well.

One big item is the pilot screw. I went to turn to count number of turns but it was already turned all the way down. Has anyone had theirs to where it wasn't preset to 1.5 to 2.5 turns? Should I set mine like that and then adjust once I get it running again.

I was going to clean the gas tank as well.

Got carb cleaned and put back together. Made one mistake by not setting drain screw all the way in and gas was just running out. Fixed it and ATV started right up. Need to check RPMs and adjust the pilot screw.

What did you set the pilot screw at after the carb rebuild? 1 1/2 to 2 turns out should be close, but fine tuning by rpm drop and rise should be used for final setting.

I ended up setting it at 2-1/4. The manual said factory set is 2-3/8. I haven't fine tuned it yet. I have to order a tach/hour meter to get it set. I ran the 4-wheeler today it has never ran better. I wish I would have done all this when I first got the ATV. I changed the bowl gaskets, idle screw, air vent hoses, pulled the gas tank, cleaned it, replaced the petcock screen, replaced the fuel line, and changed the spark plug today.

I do have a concern about the compression on the ATV. I put a compression test on it today and got 150 psi which is double what the manual says (74 psi). The spark plug was pretty fouled and I think that had to do with the carb not set right (who knows). It appeared someone over compensated the pilot screw because the they couldn't adjust the idle screw. I put a dab of oil on the new idle screw and ran it in and out a few times and it cleaned the threads. If I put seafoam through it a few times will it clean the carbon buildup in the chamber. Suggestions are appreciated.

Compression that high can mean two things. 1. You have carbon deposits in the cylinder head. 2. Your gauge is faulty. First I would use a different gauge to check it again. If it is still high than I would try the following. Put a high grade cleaner in the fuel tank and run a tank through it. Then check the compression again. If it is still high than the cylinder head may have to be removed and cleaned of deposits.
