If the motor can produce +/- 74 lbs PSI of compression, is there really any reason to engage in the hassle of taking all that stuff off to make a manual measurement of the valve clearances? It sure is a lot easier to poke a compression tester in the spark plug hole than to go through the feeler gauge measurement routine.

I would say a clearance check would still need to be done. The valves wouldn't hang open if they were loose and it could still read +/-74psi if they were loose. It is possible if they were to tight that it would read a lower compression because the valves are hangin open but using just a compression tester leaves too much guess work. Recording compression readings from time to time is a good idea though.
