Hard start unless already warmed

Hey folks, I have a 2006 Rincon I’ve owned for years. For the last couple months, it cranks for a solid 5 or 6 seconds before starting from cold. It used to fire right up. Once it’s been ridden (warmed), it fires right up. It’s only when you FIRST start it. Has nothing to do with outside temp because it’s stored in heated garage. I’m worried I’m putting more use on the starter than it used to do for years. What changed? What can I check? Is there a cold start sensor or something?

Not that I am aware of. It's fuel injected so it should be spraying more fuel in when cold and start quicker.
I've got an 06 also and it usually starts on the 2nd or 3rd revolution when cold. Like yours, mine fires up immediately when hot.
I would try adding some fuel injector cleaner like seafoam or techron to your fuel tank to try and clean the fuel injector.
Check/replace your air filter, replace your spark plug with an OEM plug.
Have you upgraded to the newer fuel pump filter assembly? I heard about that when I got mine many years ago and did it. Your filter may be partially plugged. Your engine needs more fuel to start when cold, so any fuel restriction doesn't help.
When was the last time you checked your valve clearances? Incorrect clearances may slow the engine starting when cold.
Have you ever cleaned your IAC? It controls the idle rpm and usually only an issue when it causes a high idle. Easy to check, remove and clean.
Is your battery condition good? It may be turning the engine over slower than usual.
Good luck...

Everything in @Kevcules post is worth checking.
IAC would probably be first on my list.

I have never checked valve clearances. Bingo! That might be it. Thanks. I guess I have my work cut out for me.

I have never checked valve clearances. Bingo, that sounds like the answer! Guess I have my work cut out for me.
